MF35 AXLE SEALS

I read Big Dean's advice to Bob B posted on Jan. 29/02 in reply to "Axle Seals". I ate it up but need more. My axles and shims were mixed up on the way to the machine shop on my MF35 gas tractor. I guessed and reassembled it the best way I knew how. Now the opposite axle turns the same way when turning the other axle. I do not hear the inner ends of the axles bumping against one another. Do I shift around the original shims that I started with from one side to another or get more shims? One MF service manager said I might have to take off the top with the lift arms on and look down into the differential to see the problem. Is this difficult to remove the top and how is it done or ??? Should I can that notion and do the shim shuffle? My tractor is on blocks and wheels are off.
