A remote canister type it is not a full flow filter. It only filters a slight amount of the oil at a time,usually picking up its feed from an oil galley fitting. The holes you see are all that there is,enough to let the oil in and back out. With these type filters,regular oil changes with a good quality oil is a must or you will have clogged oil passages,and a sludgy mess in the engine because the majority of dirty oil remains in the engine and is not cleaned by the filter
