Buying a tractor from whom?????

I'm interested in purchasing a standard model tractor such as 990 Oliver, 830 JD, or 660 IH.
I have noticed that many of these types of tractors are sold by a small number of independent sellers. When I contact them they never seem to know the history of the tractor or at least they will not convey it to me. I would rather buy from a farmer that was wanting to sell his tractor and could tell me about it. I would rather give the farmer a little extra and cut out the middle man. I have been warned by some that buying from a tractor jockey is a gamble. Where and how would one go about buying a good sound standard tractor? Thanks for your help.
