The wire running through the external loop builds a magnetic field inside the ampmeter which causes the needle to move,just as the internal shunt in a terminal type ammeter does.
I have converted many old Fords to negative ground and all you have to do is remove that heavy wire and run it through the loop in the opposite direction. Same effect as reversing the wires on an ammeter with terminals and an internal shunt. If your amp needle bounces between 5-10 amps the guage is working,and the problem if any is in the generator or whatever they use for a field resistance control.
