I would rather see 9 out 12 not sold Items, than have the owners bidding up their own stuff. The last few auctions I've been at, I saw more than one owner getting his stuff back, when I enquired about it, I was told the auctioneer just deducts what is charged to his bid number, no fees or tax, and he will re-auction it in a week or so at another auction house untill he gets what he wants. At least with a reserve everyone is usually informed there is a reserve. Even if the reserve is too high it's better than having shills in the crowd just to drive up the price. Personally I believe on small items if you put it up for auction you should just take your chances. On larger items a reserve is nesessary just to keep a $5,000. item from selling for $20. because everyone at the auction lives in an apartment.
