While driving my Fordson diesel major home the other day, it suddenly developed a REALLY SHARP AND LOUD knocking noise in the engine (it sounded like one of the pistons was hitting somthing). But there was no excess smoke at tickover, oil pressure fine etc. Because I was 20 miles from home at it was getting dark, I had no choice but to carry on. I took it slowly but noticed a bit of extra smoke when pulling hard and a slight loss of power but by the time I had got home the knock had completely dissapeared. It still starts easily and runs really smoothly, exactly as before! My first thoughts were that a main or big end bearing had gone but the knock wouldn't dissapear if they had. So what could it be? I would really apreciate any ideas. P.S. the tractor is retro fitted with a 6 cyl. Ford 6D truck engine.
