Let's go back to 40 years ago when gas was 5 gallons for a dollar. If I remember right, I was happy with a job that paid $1.00 per hour. So, I worked an hour and bought 5 gallons of gas. Today, here in the U.S.A. most of us can still buy the same 5 gallons with a hour's wage. (We pay a fellow $10.00 / hr. to mow the lawn.) A fancy new pickup 40 years ago would set you back $2500. Today, for $25,000, you can drive one off the lot that would make that 1964 model pale in comparsion. So, with this thinking, we are really buying fuel at 1964 prices...using 2004 dollars.
