Jon, The carbon is likely due to overuse of the choke or some other reason to run too rich ,maybe carb needs adjusted,If tractor smokes black runnung too rich is the problem, if blue smoke then it is burning oil, What is the condition of your air cleaner?? what due you mean dimple in the tailpipe?
