Sounds as if you had a self-catch of what we call Big Red or Mammoth Red. Big Red is usually sown as a plow-down crop in order to enrich the soil and is only viable for one year. It would appear the the original crop went to seed and hence you got a crop of hay that way. Because you harvested the crop as hay, there would be no seed for this year. The other most common red clover is called double cut ,or little red ,with the first crop of the year taken as hay and the second cut that year is harvested as seed, thus the "double cut".
