Been there. You'll get a LOT of advice about checking laws and horror stories about lawsuits and I have no doubt that all of it is true. None of it will solve the problem. If your state has a leash law, the dog (owner) is in violation. If you have livestock you probably have a statutory right to protect them. If you make phone calls and check the laws, and THEN something happens to the dog, guess who they'll come after to ask questions? So, based on the above, and my personal experience, the best thing is The Three S's: Shoot.
