I've always heard that the defination of "weed" is a misplaced plant. Therefore in the farmer's fields they would not be a weed, but surely would be in your crop field. I scatter the seed from a few each year as I have an area that is in a migratory path for butterflies. I also harvest extra seed pods and give them away to others that HAVE A RURAL PLACE of their own and want to provide munchies for butterflies. There are a number of different species of the generic "milkweed" plant. A copy of "Weeds of the West" can be obtained from your local library through Inter-Library Loan for you to peruse. It shows several of the varities. A synthetic rubber from the milkweed sap was also under development during the war years. I suspect that were George Washington Carver be alive and set to the task of utilizing the plant it would no longer remain a weed. Now where is that hemp plant when I need a rope to tie a bundle of milkweed together?
