I heard the term a lot when the axle broke off
the 300 international rowcrop. Heard it again
when the other axle broke off some years
later. Dad used several other words as well.....

The neighbor had quite the experence when
he was driving an International with mounted
corn picker down the road in road gear & the
axel broke.......

Anyhow, crystalized metal was when the iron
in the axle was real brittle, and broke/
shattered. Would have been in the early 70s
when this was being discussed.
