I also had a 97 f150 with the 4.2, bought it new, treated with kid gloves, oil and filter every 3000. Developed a knock, a real knock not a tick or anything like that. Got what I could for it on a tradein. Was real disappointed with ford on this one. Dont think they have all the problems solved with the v6 motor. Never pulled with it at all, I did like the truck as I could get 19 to 21 mpg almost year around here in WI. I think ford has some problems and are just looking the other way.
