They are an Applied Physics Laboratory and are associated with a University--I believe CalTech. They do a lot of really neat things, you would be on the leading edge of some technologies. Most of the lunar/Mars rover are done by JPL. Typically air and rocket stuff, not so much water and ships. It will be like working for a university and you will find some bright young people either getting experience doing grunt work or using the projects for their research to get an advanced degree. Also the older guys will be quirky--nerds or funny little mannerisms. Most of these really smart guys haven't been in the real world. Go for it. It could be fun.
