The gas powered 1996 trucks do not have the torque of the Cummins diesel and are not as hard on the AT. The only problem is allowing the AT to "Hunt" for the proper gear when towing a heavy load. This creates tremendous heat very quickly, and of course destroys the AT. Dodge recommends locking out OD when towing at 55mph or below to reduce this risk of frying your AT. If the truck gets a slight shudder when accelerating with a load, the torque convertor is slipping and if allowed to continue will ruin everything with metal shavings from the convertor. The solution is a HD convertor and valve body, which eliminates AT problems assuming you don't overheat it. To learn all about this go to: dieseltruckresourse.com
