update:wound up there was a bearing GONE in the top of the 90degree gearbox upper seal had left some time ago. box full of nasty smelling goo. salvaged ring and pinion installed grease zert in lieu of 90wt packed all new brgs w/J.D. cornhead grease. got lucky and did all w/load still on wagon. shaft is splined into auger from lower side. amazing how much better things looked in the daylight. fred
