HELP!!!!!!!

I found out that my new rebuilt generator has drained the current from a new six volt battery. I put the battery on 2 amp charge for twenty four hours. When I disconnected the charger cables I found that I had put the positive cable on the neg battery post and the neg cable one the pos. post. Have I completely ruined the battery? Now it seems the battery does not want to take a charge! Other than tell me how stupid I am what have I done! Appreciate you advice.
