Zane, you're right that the capacitor helps prevent burning of the points, however it does work with both low and high voltage. When the coil fires, the condenser does "discharge" fully into the ground created by the spark at the plug. Without the condenser, there would be risk of arcing at the points and the volume of the spark at the plug would be suppressed. The voltage of the spark would be high, but the amperage would be low. It might be like the glass static displays that cause your hair to stand out. Lots of voltage, no amperage. RKS
