improvise tractor chains with cable??

I've heard of people winding cable around their tractor tires to use as chains, but never talked with anyone who has tried it.
I have a set of chains for my backhoe, but have a clearance problem and they rub hard on the ROPS cage. I thought the cable trick would clear and still give me enough traction for snow plowing.
If anyone has tried this stunt, I'd like to hear how it worked out.
