Make certain "Mr. Happy" is pulled back out of the way first. Don't laugh at the following, I see it done wrong all the time by adults. One hand on the zipper handle and the other at the zipper bottom stretching the zipper taut. And keeping the "undone" zipper parts lined up and in close proximity. I have to keep showing the wife and kids all the time how to use a zipper without problems. They are always yanking them unsupported, out of line and jamming fabric in the zipper. They have ruined a small fortune in clothes by ruining zippers. As previously stated, candle wax is an ideal lubricant.
