No the plate wont have to come off you will need to pull the pin out of the shifter by either undoing a bold or you will need to punch the round endcap out with hammer and punch then punch the pin in the shifter out pull shifter out from top, Then uuse a screw driver and gently pry the square pins so that they are all in the out of gear.
