diesel engine knocking

I have a two cyl diesel that knocks.The engine has been fully rebuilt after I found the cylinders and pistons were very badly worn at the top end of the cylinders.(possibly from knocking before I purchased it)
The pump timing is set by the specs at 27 deg btdc.It starts well,runs well at revs (2000max) but knocks.I can adjust the timing by placing shims under the pump (bosch) or I can alter the pump timing on the end of the camshaft by repositioning the pump cam by 3 deg incriments. Should I advance or retard the timing?
What would happen if I mixed a little diesel oil with the diesel fuel to tone the diesel down a little? If the engine is too far retarded what will the symptons be? and if it is too far advanced? The motor has had new pistons,bearings,injectors ,headr repaired etc.
It knocked as bad before the rebuild.
