Your Dad is a wise man. I remove the valve covers on my Dad"s 90k Buick with a lot of them road miles. It had a lot of sludge. Penzoil was used.

On the other hand I removed the valve cover and pan on my 100k Ford that has same type of mixed mileage. Maybe even a bit more in town driving. I used Quaker and Valvoline. It was almost clean as a whisle.
