O.T.Talking Vortek

I was reading down the page about the Vortek vs the older type GM engines.I have a 2000 3/4 ton twd Vortek 5.7 litre with 373 rear gears and auto trans w/overdrive and all it gets is 12-12.5 mph local and 17.8 on the interstate.Will a new program from Hypertech help this?My 93 with throttle body injection,342 gears and extended cab,bigger tires,and 4wd got better than 14 mpg in town and 18-19 on the hwy.I thought that the Vortek and the overdrive that it would be better than it is on fuel.Oh by the way a friend told me an 8.1 litre will kill you on gas.His was bad enough that he traded it off.
