I always did it the same way as Farmall_Ryan, but my neighbor showed me a new way awhile back. His spreader apron chain broke with a full load. He just took the tractor and loader and tipped the whole thing upside down in the field. Then tipped it back up again and leveled off the crap with the bucket. (didn't see close up how well the spreader faired though. He does still use it however!)
