As long as you are hauling your own items you do not need the DOT numbers. If you are hauling other folk's stuff for hire then you do need the DOT numbers. The DOT registration will be a total headache for you, and the worst part is that before you can get the numbers, you need to provide proof of insurance of minimum $100,000 liability and minimum $10,000 cargo. You will need to locate a commercial insurance writer to provide you with it. Your regular auto ins. company will not write this for you. I looked into doing this a couple of years ago, decided against it rather quickly when I learned that the insurance alone was going to cost minimum of $6,000 per year.
