When we bought our house 21 years ago we purchased 1000 seedlings (500 Blue Spruce & 500 Black Walnut) from the State of MI for $150.00. The trees are now 25'(spruce) to 35'(walnut) tall. We lost about 20 of each due to mowing. They were planted in 5' rows that were plowed and disced and watered twice a week for the first year. after the grass grew back, I dug and ringed the trees with wood chips for the next 10 years. It was a lot of work but worth it. I made about $12.000.00 selling 150 spruce when they became too crowded.
