Blade attacked rad

I was cutting grass with my Case 830 gas using a 7 ft. fininishing mower to give the tractor a little work. After a turn (not sharp) I heard a thud in the front end, and then seen steam come out. I thought it must be a rad hose and nursed in back to the barn about two minutes away. When I checked the rad there was a good sized gouge in the rad and one blade was bent with half (long ways) missing. I removed the rad today and the fan bolts were snug so I'm wondering how the fan hit the rad. After straightening out the chunk of the blade left in the shroud I noticed about 4 in. of older looking metal and 2 in. of new. It appears the blade was cracked for years and finally gave out. This has never happened to me in 40 years of driving a lot of old stuff. Does this happen or is it just a fluke with me? Now I need a re-core which will not be cheap and another fan. Can blades be re-riveted back on to the fan? Thanks.
