Not sure I understand your problem enough to give complete advice, but the first thing you need to do is check the timing of the knotter drive as well as the plunger. Read the manual and if you don't have a manual get one before working on it. The little gear you mention may be held in place by a roll pin and it may be broken. The NH knotters I am familiar with have a bolt at the back which , when taken loose, allow the individual knotter to be rotated out so it can be worked on. Hope this helps. KEH
