Hey Tim, I'd have to agree with all the rest... you'll need an education AND certification to make the big bucks. Around here (mountain west) we're in the middle of an energy boom... 'bout every morning I see around 50 or so weldin' rigs headed out (owner/operators) Those guys are knockin' down somewhere around 50 bucks an hour (for themselves AND their rigs)... but the competition is tough. They've all probably been burnin rod for 20 to 30 years... and they still have to hustle to get the good jobs! Not trying to discourage you, but the one post was correct... If all you plan to do is burn a little rod... be prepared to make just over minimum wage! (ask me how I know... been there/done that!) HTH, Regards, DL
