Amen brother. That is one of the most well thought out synoposis of the current energy situation I have read. One thing I would add is the number of people building gigantic houses. In this part of the country, it is crazy the size of houses people are building. 3000 square feet is the norm in many newer subdivisions and a tad on the small side in others. Even in my subdivision which is older, people are building two story additions the same size as the original house and sometimes bigger in their back yards. It's insane. They don't realize the amount of energy it takes to heat and cool those barns. As for gasoline, I was reading in Business Week not too long ago about an upstart company that had developed a kit for the Toyota Prius hybrid car. It was such a simple idea, I cannot understand why car companies aren't clammoring to put it on hybrid cars. The simply added another bank of batteries and put an external plug and charger on it so you could plug it in at night. There was another slight modification done to the controls to allow you to run it on battery power only. Anyway, for the average commuter who drove back and forth 15 miles each way to work, you could run off of battery power only and never have to engage the gasoline engine on the car. Performance is supposed to be comparable to a conventional car. Will we ever see it on a large scale? It probably depends on the price of gasoline and not on developing a sound and efficient energy policy.
