What about a trailer? My dad had a Chevy Tracker. 4cyl would do about 30mpg if you kept it to reasonable speeds. It wasn't a super powerhouse but it got along good. It'd pull a 2000# trailer which is plenty for most things. If you really needed a full size pickup a couple times a year why not rent one? I bought my Dakota to pull my tractor from one end of Maine to the other. Sure was handy having it but for $500 I could have rented more truck and saved plenty of cash over the life of the truck. I use my pickup some at the farm and some to haul snowmobiles. It does 18mpg which is good for what it is but I'm starting to thing the 30mpg Tracker would be a better deal for what I need.
