O.T. ford auto trans

just purchased a 88 ford ranger 2.9 v6 with overdrive automatic.at about 35 miles per hour with the trans in drive,it hunts between 2nd and 3rd.if it is in overdrive,it hunts between over and 3rd.at about 55 mph and above it will stay in overdrive.I believe its a sensor problem,but,which one and where.
