Cowman is right. What he is talking about is a backer plate mounted on each side of the rear axle. Should have a rubber gromet as a dust cover over the slot. Remove that and inside the hub is a star wheel. The star wheel is up or down for brake adjustments and usually is done with a screwdriver. Sometimes the teeth get worn down and it will not adjust itself. When backing up in lot or drive and hitting the brakes a little harder than normal will adjust it sometimes, but if you still have problems keeping it adjusted after a manual adjustment, probably needs reworked. If you don't find a bar against that starwheel inside then someone has removed it and it will never work right until fixed. Any squeaks means trouble from the rear brakes.
