Are you sure the controller is cycling properly? Sounds like the glo plugs are staying on all the time, which would account for their short life. I"m not familiar with Mercedes controllers, but there shouldn"t be power on the glo plugs for more than a short time (10"s of seconds??) after the engine starts.

Autolite glo plugs have a terrible reputation, deserved or not. I"ve run Motorcraft (made by Beru) in my diesel pickups with good luck.

Might want to connect a test light to one of the wires feeding the glo plugs & see if power cycles correctly.
