I have one, the transmission is a two speed, changed by the lever that goes left to right on the floorboards. The forward-reverse lever is on the left. It doesn"t feather too well, mostly in or out. The transmission is a Twin Disc setup. I think there are about 20 clutch disc plates in it, at about $20 each, so when rebuild time comes it is kinda pricey. There is some internal adjustment to the clutch, by depressing a locking tab and turning a nut. Mine needs adjusting as it pops out of gear ocasionally, but I never seem to have time. This transmission setup was used from the 1950"s until I think 1982. Then it went hydrostatic, which would be much better. First gear is too fast for close trimming, and too slow for open area mowing. Second gear is too fast except for transport as it doesn"t mow very clean. Hang on to your hat when you start riding. The hard turns are like a tilt-a-wheel. Lean forward when turning and it isn"t too bad. They are not very good at hillsides and ditches. The tractor is too light on the drive wheels. To get out of the ditch, the deck needs to be raised and stand up and lean forward to get more weight on the drive wheels. All in all it is well built by 1958 standards.
