Unfortunately the photo is of a gas tractor. I have looked at several diesels and have yet to find a good, readable serial number. Apparently the battery acid leaks down on the spot where the serial number was, or was supposed to be, and eats up the metal enough to obliterate the stamped numbers over the years. On the diesel tractors I have looked at, the numbers are just, plain gone. Too bad Ford didn't have a better idea about where to put the serial numbers, but apparently they didn't think about that potential problem. It appears to be much less of a problem with gas tractors, maybe because of the difference in the battery box area. The series number can be inferred by studying the options the tractor has and decoding it from the Ford Tractor Resource Page or the I&T manual. For example, a 1959 larger size diesel with a 4 speed transmission, adjustable front end and 3 point would probably be a 841D. With the backhoe attachment, you might have an industrial model tractor, with a heavier front end and (I think) a different power steering system. I would love to have one of those! Good luck!
