I had this happen on my Deere and it was pitted wet sleeves and I had to do an in-frame. I don't think your engine has sleeves, but there might still be pitting of the cylinder walls. I have heard of it happening on the 401 six sylinder parent bore Ford tractor DIesels, and I have seen it on Ford-IH IDI pickup diesels. Just a thought, the other post has a good idea but you might keep it in mind if none of the other tests show anything. I believe you can sleeve the block if it comes to that, but I hope it doesn't, good luck.
