Lead acid batteries are good if they can stay up on charge. Every time they get discharged a part of them dies. A deep cycle marine battery is needed if the battery is going to experience periodic discharge to any extent. If this battery was in a state of large discharge for any length of time it is likely junk. http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/index.htm Thats a link where there is a lot to know on batteries. Your battery is likely sulfated. Look it up on the link. A slow charge is what is needed. A 6 volt tractor needs all the help it can get. I would get another battery. Don't allow batteries to be discharged. Charge them up as soon as you can.
