First off that would be called a 1948 8N first year of production of the 8N thats where the 8 in the name comes from. As far as the oil yep could be the head gasket or just plain years of build up. And yes I know they started building the 8N in 47 but there still a 48 LOL. Unless you have a 3 speed tranny then its a 2N
