We had a 6 month old cocker that had the same problem. After the local vet did his which dance for 7 days to no help we took him to Cornell University vet college. They promptly x-rayed him and found he had one of those gumball machine super balls lodged in his intestine. They held little hope for him and when they tryed to put him under to surgically remove the ball he cashed out. Dad mailed a copy of the report to the local vet with the suggestion that he find another line of work.
