Spector, as far as I know there isn't any problem joining a harvest crew. I'm sure there are crews for next year being formed in Alberta right now or will in the next couple months.
I think that it will help if you grew up on a farm. If you check some Canadian farm magazines you will find in the classified sections adds for crew members. Though many crews are formed in Texas and work North, many are from Alberta or Saskatchewan and work their way back home.
Start making early contacts with these guys and you'll get on a crew. This is usually a 4-5 month job and its 7 days a week 12-14 hours a day. If your young as you are you'll have a great experience.
Are you in the Red Deer area? I just spent 3 years at Shell Canada in Fort Saskatchewan. I'm now retired to the farm. Good luck. I hope you get what you want.
