Here in Illinois the Montgomery County Board recently sold 120,000 acres of county owned coal rights for something like 6 million. The company that bought the rights wants to use the longwall method of mining. In longwall mining the machine mines a 1000 to 1500 foot wide panel. The surface of the land subsides 4-6 feet everywhere except the strips left at the edges of the mining machine. ( Instant terraces ) You can imagine the damage to surface buildings/homes as the miner gradually progresses under these structures. Needless to say , the landowners here are fighting this method of mining. Our Farm Bureau and NRCS have recently joined the battle. If it were me, I would try to keep any rights I had and tell the gas company to take their paltry offering and get off my property.
