That seems to also apply to the other auctions he does for hire. I've gone to several that he ran, usually on-site farm auctions. It appeared to me, that anything interesting that was not bid up high, would later appear at his tractor-yard. I stopped going to any more such auctions, there seems to be no chance of getting a good deal on anything.
I went to Jim's yesterday looking for used parts for my AC HD4 bulldozer, not to attend the auction. I like looking at the auction stuff, but do not think it's possible to get any bargains there.
There's another equipment dealer nearby, Catskill Tractor in Franklin, NY and they have an "auction" every spring. There are a few items there that have become annual exhibits - and much is not for sale without the very-high minimum price being met. It will be in a few weeks, and I think their Deere 450 dozer is there for the fifth year at the bargain price of $16,000 !
It seems many advertised auctions are simply, as you state, tag sales - and often with a 10% buyer's premium added to the already high price.
