Allan, what machine is acting as the gateway or dns server? The dns server will resolve the names when you try and ping from one to another by name instead of ip address. Are both of these machines connected into a switch ( or hub ) or into something that is acting as a gateway ? I suspect the problem lies in the protocol setup on the two machines, remember if you want to access files and printers you need the netbeui protocol installed as well as tcp/ip, the file and printer sharing acts over netbeui ( netbios ). Also check the setting about what you are logging into, windows logon, network logon, etc. Those might be causing you some problems as well. Anyhow...just some thoughts. Good luck!
