I have to agree with "OLD". A 6 volt system properly equipped and the proper weight oil will work just fine. I have several 6 volt tractors and they all start in all weather. Even the Super M with live hydraulics and power steering starts in cold weather. For a 6 volt system shop for a battery with the highest CCA, use 1 gauge cables and make sure the starter and charging sysem operate properly. To fully charge an 8 volt connect a digital volt meter to the battery while charging, at 10 volts it will be fully charged. More than 10 volts will overcharge. If your system can't provide a full charge, the battery will sulfate and shorten the life of the battery. My 2 cents, but to each their own. 8 volt batteries are available at most farm stores.
