I would say that it is not typical for a Northstar to use that much oil. The question is not whether or not this is "normal", but rather whether or not your brother-in-law can get Cadillac to replace the engine under warranty. I would say that he will have to complain long and loud before they will replace the engine. But does he really want that? The new engine might have better oil consumption, but what else will the mechanic mess up during the engine swap?
