where to start to get started

a few years ago my step father bought a catipilar bull dozer i think its a 60's its a 6 cylinder diesel with a pony motor i know it drove to the spot it is in because i was on it when it was parked i was wondering where i should start to try to bring this beast to life again i have never started an engine with a pony motor so i will need instructions on that also im assuming the pony motor is gas? thanks for any help chris
