This is typically called "coordination of benefits." It is designed so that you do not make more disabled than you would if you were working (wouldn't give many people much motivation to go back to work). For example, if you were collecting $1,800 from your ins. and $1,800 from Social Security, you may be making more than your regular income. As far as changing it after you have your policy, you would have to read the fine print. I get mine through work, but my wife has a policy through Mutual of Omaha. I know policies offered change often, so you have to shop based on the same criteria. I feel disability insurance is more important than life insurance, so make sure you don't drop your current policy until underwriters approve a new one! Good Luck
