The column shifted 10's had the 8x4 syncroshift transmission, which was a new introduction when the 10's were introduced in 1982. The tractors with the top cover mounted shifters had the old 8x2 crashbox, which dates back to 1965. The 8x2 was about indestructable. The 8x4 gave some better ratios to work with, particulairly in reverse. The only problem with the 8x4 is th eshift pattern. Some people love them, and some hate them. For my money, I'd probably stay with the 8x2.... or go to a 30 series with the 8x8 if I wanted a real shuttle transmission. If you like driving it, go for it. There's nothing wrong with the 8x4. Rod
